Mass shooting in daycare center claims 35 lives including 22 children

Bangkok: 35 people were killed in a mass shooting at a children's daycare centre in the northeastern province of Thailand. 22 of those killed were children

The police said that the attack took place on Thursday afternoon. Many people were injured.

It was the deadliest mass shooting in the country's history. The assailant, identified as a former police officer, killed his wife and child.

Police have identified the suspect as 34-year-old former police officer Panya Kamrap. Officials also said he had been discharged from the force earlier this year for drug-related offences.

After arriving home, he killed his wife and child and then himself, police said.

The reason for the shooting is unclear.

The number of gun owners in Thailand is very high. But official figures do not include much information on illegal weapons. Many of them are imported from neighbouring countries.

Mass shootings are rare here. But in 2020, a soldier angry over a property deal shot dead 29 people and injured 57 others.
