Two metric tons of cocaine found and seized by the Italian authorities

In one of the largest drug busts in Italy's history, the Italian police have confiscated approximately two metric tons (2,000kg) of cocaine that were discovered floating off the coast of Sicily. The drugs, which were packaged in 70 waterproof containers and equipped with a tracking device, had an estimated street value of over €400m ($440m).

Investigators believe that the cargo ship carrying the drugs dumped them in the sea with the intention of retrieving them at a later time. A navy surveillance plane spotted the packages, which were held together by fishing nets, and made up of approximately 1,600 individual bricks of drugs.
