Beijing - On August 19, Beijing initiated combined air and naval patrols alongside military exercises near Taiwan, a move that China has described as a "strong warning" against "Taiwan independence" separatists engaging with foreign entities, according to Xinhua News Agency.
This action was prompted by Taiwan Vice President William Lai's recent visit to the US, which China vehemently opposed. Shi Yi, spokesperson for the Chinese People's Liberation Army's Eastern Theater Command, stated that these patrols and exercises aim to enhance the coordination between military aircraft and vessels and their capability to assert dominance in sea and airspace. Shi emphasized that these activities are a trial of the armed forces' readiness for actual combat situations, serving as a stern rebuke to "Taiwan independence" advocates who may collaborate with foreign forces.
Taiwan's Defense Ministry promptly condemned China's military drills near the island, denouncing them as "irrationally provocative behavior." The ministry pledged to deploy appropriate troops as stipulated in the "Regulations on the Handling of Emergencies during the Period of Regular Combat Readiness of the National Army" to safeguard the Republic of China's freedom, democracy, and sovereignty through tangible actions.
Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense criticized China's continuous incursions into the region, noting significant disruptions to regional security caused by the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) aircraft and naval vessels. The ministry decried the current military exercise as counterproductive to the peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait, reflecting a militaristic stance and reinforcing China's military expansionist intentions.
The statement from the Ministry of National Defense underscored that in response to repeated provocations by the Communist military, Taiwan's national army remains ready to defend the country, embracing the principles of "preparing for war, not seeking war, responding to war, not avoiding war." The statement expressed determination and confidence in ensuring national security.
Taiwan called upon its citizens to stand united and form a consensus amid the escalating situation across the strait. A collaborative effort between the military and civilians was emphasized as pivotal in building a strong defense capability and safeguarding the nation.
China had previously denounced Vice President Lai's visit to the US, vowing to take "strong measures." In an official statement from China's Foreign Ministry, it asserted its opposition to any official interactions between the US and Taiwan. China urged the US to adhere to the one-China principle, cease all forms of contact with Taiwan, and refrain from supporting "Taiwan independence" or "two Chinas." The statement highlighted China's unwavering commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
