New York - India maintained its robust diplomatic outreach during the UN General Assembly in New York, engaging with nations from both the global north and south across various continents. Additionally, India continued its efforts in West Asia and Africa.
On Friday, following his participation in a Quad ministerial meeting and discussions with his Japanese and Australian counterparts, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held talks with Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani of Bahrain. He highlighted the fruitful conversation centered around topics such as connectivity, economic ties, and regional dynamics.
Jaishankar also met with the UK's Minister of State, Tariq Ahmad, for a substantial one-on-one discussion. They reviewed the state of their bilateral relationship and delved into recent developments regarding Ukraine. Given the significant Sikh diaspora in the UK, the conversation may have also touched upon Canada's recent claims, considering the unique relationships between India, Canada, and the UK.
On Saturday, Jaishankar had a meeting with Egypt's Foreign Minister, Sameh Shoukry. They appreciated the positive remarks regarding India's G20 Presidency and assessed the substantial progress made in their bilateral cooperation. Notably, 2023 marked a milestone year in India-Egypt relations.
Another meeting took place with Uganda's Foreign Minister, Odongo Jeje. Jaishankar fondly recalled his previous visit to Uganda and expressed satisfaction with the progress of various bilateral initiatives. He pledged full support for Uganda's upcoming presidencies of NAM and G77.
Continuing India's increased engagement with Cyprus, Jaishankar met with Cyprus's Foreign Minister, Constantinos Kambas. They discussed follow-up actions to Jaishankar's visit in December, noting India's growing interest in the Mediterranean region and reaffirming Cyprus as a valued partner.
Additionally, Jaishankar met with Guinea Bissau's Foreign Minister, Carlos Pereira, to discuss expanding their development partnership and bolstering trade and investment ties.
The minister's agenda included addressing a significant event focusing on India and the global south, along with a separate session on India's G20 Presidency.
