GAZA -In a recent development, U.S. President Joe Biden has expressed concern over the situation in the Gaza Strip, emphasizing the need to protect hospitals in the region. Israeli tanks have reportedly advanced towards Al Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, with Israel claiming that the hospital is situated atop tunnels used by Hamas fighters. President Biden urged for "less intrusive" actions by Israel in this regard.
The Israeli military, on the other hand, released footage alleging that weapons were stored in the basement of Rantissi Hospital, a pediatric facility specializing in cancer treatment. Amidst the ongoing conflict, the armed wing of Hamas, Al-Qassam Brigades, announced its readiness to release up to 70 women and children held as hostages in exchange for a five-day truce. However, it remains uncertain if Israel will accept this proposal.
Addressing the situation, President Biden stated, "My hope and expectation is that there will be less intrusive action relative to hospitals, and we remain in contact with the Israelis." He also mentioned ongoing negotiations with Qatar for a ceasefire and the release of prisoners.
Reports indicate that at least 650 patients are still inside Al Shifa Hospital, desperately seeking evacuation to another medical facility. The Gaza health ministry spokesperson reported 32 patient deaths in the previous three days, including three newborns, due to the siege and power shortages.
In response to the escalating violence, White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan expressed the U.S.'s desire for longer pauses in the conflict, emphasizing the context of a potential hostage release. Meanwhile, there were clashes at a second major hospital, al-Quds, in northern Gaza, which has ceased functioning. The Palestinian Red Crescent reported heavy gunfire around the hospital, hindering evacuation efforts.
As the situation unfolds, the international community closely watches the developments in the region, with concerns raised about the humanitarian impact of the conflict and the need for a lasting resolution.
