Israeli Forces Intensify Operations in Al Shifa Hospital Amidst Claims of Hamas Tunnels

GAZA/JERUSALEM - In a continuation of its campaign against Palestinian Hamas militants, Israel has stated that its forces are actively operating in and around Gaza's largest hospital, Al Shifa. The army alleges that Hamas stored weapons and ran a command center in tunnels beneath the hospital buildings.

Israeli troops reportedly entered Al Shifa hospital in the early hours of Wednesday, recovering automatic weapons, grenades, ammunition, and flak jackets from an undisclosed building within the complex, as shown in an army video. The search, described as "precise" and "intelligence-based," aims to expose alleged terror activities within the hospital.

U.S. President Joe Biden accused Hamas of committing war crimes by locating its military headquarters under the hospital. He noted that Israel had entered with a limited number of troops and urged caution.

Despite previous claims by the Israeli military of tunnels under Al Shifa, no mention was made of finding tunnel entrances in the recent operation. Hamas denies these allegations and calls for international verification.

Israel's campaign, initiated after militants attacked southern Israel on October 7, has led to significant casualties and the evacuation of the northern half of Gaza. President Biden reiterated support for a two-state solution and warned against occupying Gaza, emphasizing the need for a post-war plan.

As tensions escalate, the United States has increased its military presence in the region, deploying two aircraft carriers. Meanwhile, Iran, a supporter of Hamas, reportedly assured political and moral support but ruled out direct intervention.

In a humanitarian development, the first fuel truck entered Gaza, delivering diesel for UN aid distribution. However, the fuel is not intended for hospital use, and Gaza continues to face severe shortages.

The United Nations Security Council called for urgent humanitarian pauses in fighting and the unconditional release of hostages held by Hamas.

While Israel has rejected ceasefire calls, negotiations for a temporary truce are reportedly ongoing, mediated by Qatar, with potential releases of hostages on both sides being discussed.
