RAFAH, Gaza Strip - Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have uncovered another significant tunnel network operated by Hamas militants, this time beneath the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis. The operation, led by the elite Yahalom combat engineering unit and supported by additional forces, resulted in the discovery of an extensive underground passage system believed to have been utilized by senior Hamas officials.
During the raid, troops encountered various obstacles strategically placed by Hamas operatives, including blast doors and barricades. Despite these challenges, the IDF successfully breached the barriers and engaged Hamas gunmen in close-quarters combat. Multiple militants were neutralized during the operation, which also involved the use of "special means" by the IDF.
The discovered tunnel, spanning over a kilometer in length, was equipped with living quarters, water infrastructure, and electricity facilities. The IDF estimates that Hamas invested millions of shekels in the construction of this underground network. It is believed to have served as a crucial hideout and operational base for Hamas leaders and the Khan Younis Brigade in planning and executing attacks.
Meanwhile, tensions in the Gaza Strip have escalated further, particularly in the southern city of Rafah, where Israeli airstrikes have intensified. Tragically, over a dozen members of a single family were killed in a devastating air strike, adding to the already staggering death toll in the region.
Efforts to broker a ceasefire and secure the release of hostages held by Hamas militants are ongoing, with Israel signaling a willingness to explore potential progress in negotiations. However, the humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate rapidly, exacerbated by limited access to aid and essential services.
As the conflict persists, both sides remain entrenched in their positions, with no immediate resolution in sight. The international community, including staunch ally the United States, faces mounting pressure to intervene and bring an end to the bloodshed. Amidst the chaos and devastation, civilians in Gaza continue to bear the brunt of the violence, desperately seeking safety and relief from the ongoing hostilities.
