Nicaragua Exiles Seven Priests to Rome Amid Diplomatic Tensions

In a recent series of actions by the Nicaraguan government, seven priests have been exiled to Rome. This group, detained earlier in Nicaragua, was sent to Rome on Wednesday, 7 August, arriving there by Thursday afternoon. The exiled priests are Víctor Godoy, Jairo Pravia, Silvio Romero, Edgar Sacasa, Harvin Torres, Ulises Vega, and Marlon Velázquez, all of whom are affiliated with the dioceses of Matagalpa and Estelí. They were previously held at the Nuestra Señora de Fátima Seminary in Managua. The Nicaraguan government confirmed their departure in a press release, stating, "Seven Nicaraguan priests have left Nicaragua for Rome, Italy."

Notably, Father Frutos Valle, the administrator of the Diocese of Estelí who was detained on 26 July, was not among those exiled. This marks the fifth instance of Nicaragua exiling clergy groups. In previous occurrences, priests were exiled to the United States in October 2022 and February 2023, while other groups, including bishops Rolando Álvarez and Isidoro Mora, were sent to Rome in October 2023 and January 2024.

In a related diplomatic development, former Nicaraguan ambassador to the Organization of American States (OAS), Arturo McFields Yescas, reported that the Nicaraguan government, led by Daniel Ortega, ordered the expulsion of Brazilian ambassador Breno de Souza Brasil Días da Costa. This action was reportedly due to the ambassador's absence from the 45th-anniversary celebration of the Sandinista revolution on 19 July. In response, the Brazilian government announced the expulsion of Nicaraguan ambassador Fulvia Castro as a reciprocal measure.
