From January 25 to May 24, 2025, the Vatican Apostolic Library will participate in the Islamic Arts Biennale at the Hajj Terminal of King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Organized by the Diriyah Biennale Foundation, this event highlights the artistic and scientific contributions of Islamic civilization.
The Vatican Library will showcase several pieces from its prestigious collections within the AlMadar section. The Biennale, held at the iconic Hajj terminal which serves millions of pilgrims on their way to Mecca, provides a unique opportunity for cultural exchange, exploring the influence of Islamic art on the contemporary world.
The exhibition will feature works from museums, libraries, and collections worldwide, covering an impressive 110,000 square meters of space. It will explore "The Art of Numbers," tracing its roots in nature and its significance in Islamic culture, including mathematics, navigation, religious rituals, and architecture. Contemporary artworks will also be displayed, offering modern interpretations of these themes.
Curated by a team of international experts, the Biennale will continue the success of its 2023 edition, which attracted over 600,000 visitors. With historical artifacts and modern installations in dialogue, the 2025 event aims to connect the past, present, and future of artistic expression.
