Doctors: Pope responding to treatment but not yet out of danger

At a press conference held at Rome’s Gemelli hospital, the Pope’s medical team announced that while he isn't out of danger yet, he will need to remain hospitalized for at least another week. They also mentioned that he is joking as usual and has started working again.

Pope Francis is not “in danger of death,” but he isn’t completely “out of danger,” according to his medical team. Dr. Sergio Alfieri, the head of the Pope’s medical team, and Dr. Luigi Carbone, the Vice-Director of the Vatican’s healthcare service, addressed journalists for about forty minutes.

The doctors stated that the Pope is expected to stay in the hospital for "at least" the next week. Dr. Alfieri noted that the Pope is not on a ventilator but is still having difficulty breathing, which limits his physical activities. Despite this, the Pope is sitting in a chair, working, and joking. Alfieri shared a humorous interaction where the Pope responded to a doctor’s greeting of “Hello, Holy Father,” with “Hello, Holy Son.”

When asked about their biggest concern, the doctors mentioned the risk of germs in the Pope's respiratory tract potentially entering his bloodstream and causing sepsis. However, Dr. Alfieri expressed confidence that Pope Francis would eventually leave the hospital and return to Casa Santa Marta in the Vatican, although his chronic respiratory issues would persist.
