One Step Towards Drugs, a Lifetime of Regret

Just one use is enough; life is over. Have you seen a mousetrap? Once caught, there’s no escape. That’s how chemical drugs are. They’re not something you can try out of curiosity. Never attempt to experiment with them even once, as they open the door to total destruction. It’s your brain that gets shattered.

Many people start using drugs for fun, with friends. After the initial enjoyment fades, the addiction becomes your necessity. You won’t be able to live without it. The drugs will destroy every organ in your body, reducing them to fragments. Those who try drugs once out of curiosity, peer pressure, or to “vibe” fall into a bottomless pit, and by the time they realize it, it’s too late.

Drugs take young people to a world of dead and numb brains. Our brain consists of billions of neurons connected by even more billions of connections. Chemical drugs tear apart these neurons and connections. Drugs destroy neuron cells and alter the neurotransmitters that help brain function. This affects memory, learning, and thinking ability. These impacts persist even after stopping drug use.

Drugs first create addiction. The next stage is “withdrawal” reactions when drugs are unavailable. Users may show tendencies to attack anyone for drugs. Mental problems occur at this stage. Severe depression, suicidal tendencies, and other mental issues may manifest. Users may experience hallucinations – feeling things that aren’t there, seeing things that aren’t visible, and hearing things that aren’t audible.

The “pre-frontal lobe” function in drug users’ brains slows down. This part of the brain controls a person’s conscious actions. It shapes one’s personality and social behaviour.

Additionally, the pre-frontal lobe eliminates natural impulses to make mistakes and commit crimes, and controls negative emotional reactions. It’s the functions of this brain region that differentiate humans from animals. When it malfunctions, humans become animal-like. Chemical drugs literally transform humans into animals.

Drug users exhibit “anticipatory violence” behaviour pattern. That is, they suspect others will harm them and then attack first under the guise of self-defence.

The increased level of “dopamine” in the brain is the basis of the pleasure and sensations experienced when using drugs. This is why drug substances are used repeatedly. When certain chemicals are used, the brain’s “dopamine” levels increase excessively, leading to psychotic symptoms and aggressive behaviour. In such circumstances, drug addicts may harm or even kill others.

MDMA is the most dangerous among drugs. It’s a substance that causes mania and psychosis. It disrupts the communication system in the brain and creates dangerous chemical changes in the brain. It eliminates special intelligence. Body temperature rises. Blood pressure increases significantly, which can lead to stroke and heart attack. Regular use causes depression, anxiety, psychosis, panic attacks, suspicion, thinking problems, and aggressive tendencies.

Premature aging and death await a person who regularly uses drugs. No other disease in the world is like this. HIV virus infection can be contracted through syringes used to inject drugs. Drug users have reduced immunity, resulting in higher disease rates and mortality.

Various drugs, social media, movies featuring bloody violence, web series, changes in social and family environments, mobile phone addiction, and post-COVID crises are among the many reasons leading one to drug addiction. Children living in unhealthy situations such as broken family relationships, unbalanced parents, marital disputes, divorce, toxic parenting, single parenting, have a much higher likelihood of using drugs.

Last year, 330 people were killed in Kerala. By March 15, 2025, 70 murders have already occurred. Nearly half of those in the list of suspects are drug users. Recognize that drugs generate violent tendencies.

Along with the drug-addicted individual, families, society, and the country face destruction. We need to scientifically analyze and solve what’s really happening in the younger generation. There are no single-remedy solutions. Everyone has a responsibility to liberate children from the drug trap. To prevent Kerala from becoming a madhouse and young people from becoming wasted lives, the administrative system, law enforcement, political-religious-social-cultural-youth movements, teachers, and parents must move together as one. Action plans must be conceived and implemented. Children must be listened to, requiring a psychological approach. There must be systems to enhance the mental health of both children and parents. Those with good mental health are less likely to seek drug paths.
