In the wake of escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, the United States has expressed profound concern over Pakistan's alleged support for terrorist groups operating in the region. This apprehension comes in the aftermath of a devastating terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22, which claimed the lives of 26 civilians, including Indian tourists and a Nepali national. The attack, attributed to the Resistance Front, an offshoot of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, has intensified the already strained relations between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.
U.S. State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce emphasized the longstanding concerns regarding Pakistan's alleged support for terrorism. "This has been a dynamic we've observed disrupting lives, particularly in the Middle East, and now, tragically, in Kashmir," Bruce stated. She underscored the importance of de-escalation and open communication between India and Pakistan, noting that the U.S. has been actively engaging with leaders from both countries to prevent further conflict.
The U.S. has historically urged Pakistan to dismantle terrorist infrastructures within its borders. A 2023 report highlighted that groups like the Haqqani Network, Lashkar-e-Tayyiba (LeT), and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) continued to operate from Pakistani soil, with Islamabad taking insufficient action to dismantle them.
In response to the Pahalgam attack, India launched "Operation Sindoor" on May 7, targeting terrorist camps in Pakistan-administered Kashmir and Punjab province. The Indian government described these strikes as "focused, measured, and non-escalatory," aiming solely at terrorist infrastructures without targeting Pakistani military facilities.
The U.S. continues to monitor the situation closely, advocating for restraint and dialogue. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has engaged in discussions with Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, emphasizing the need for immediate de-escalation and direct communication to resolve the crisis peacefully.
As the international community watches with concern, the emphasis remains on preventing further escalation and encouraging both nations to engage in constructive dialogue to ensure regional stability.
