Microsoft to Preserve Notre Dame with Immersive Digital Twin Experience

Los Angeles: In a historic blend of heritage and modern technology, American tech giant Microsoft is teaming up with the French government to create a highly detailed digital replica of the iconic Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. This initiative aims to immortalize the centuries-old Gothic masterpiece in a digital format, allowing future generations to experience its grandeur virtually.

Microsoft President Brad Smith announced the collaboration, emphasizing the cultural and educational importance of the project. “Capturing every inch of the 862-year-old Notre Dame in digital form will not only preserve its legacy but also make it accessible to those who may never get a chance to visit in person,” he stated.

The digital reconstruction will be an immersive and comprehensive 3D representation, incorporating intricate architectural details of the structure making it the most authentic virtual documentation of the cathedral to date. This effort follows Microsoft’s earlier success in creating a digital model of St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican last year, showcasing the company’s growing interest in preserving historic landmarks through cutting-edge technology.

Notre Dame Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a symbol of Parisian identity, had suffered devastating damage in a fire on April 15, 2019. After five years of meticulous restoration work, the cathedral reopened its doors to the public in December 2024. Since then, over six million visitors have flocked to the rejuvenated monument in just six months, reflecting its enduring global appeal.

The digital twin is expected to become a valuable resource for historians, architects, students, and tourists alike. It will also serve as a backup model for any future conservation work, offering precise reference data in case of damage or renovation.

The French government, which took a lead role in the restoration process, has welcomed Microsoft’s involvement, viewing the project as a significant step toward merging cultural heritage with modern innovation.
