New Delhi: A highly anticipated and intense parliamentary debate will unfold today as both houses of Parliament take up the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor two of the most sensitive issues currently gripping the nation. The Lok Sabha is scheduled to begin the discussion today, followed by the Rajya Sabha tomorrow, with each house allotted 16 hours of deliberation time.
From the government’s side, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will take the floor to outline the Centre’s official stance, actions taken, and the strategic implications of Operation Sindoor, which involved India’s international outreach following the Pahalgam tragedy.
There is widespread anticipation that Prime Minister Narendra Modi may personally intervene during the session to deliver a powerful address, particularly on matters of national security, terrorism, and India’s diplomatic resolve.
The opposition, meanwhile, is preparing for a strong counter-offensive. Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, and Mallikarjun Kharge, his counterpart in the Rajya Sabha, are set to lead the charge, questioning the government’s security preparedness and the handling of post-attack diplomacy. Akhilesh Yadav of the Samajwadi Party and other prominent opposition leaders are expected to amplify criticism over perceived intelligence failures and demand accountability from the Modi government.
Adding intrigue to the proceedings is speculation over whether the Congress party will field Shashi Tharoor who headed one of the international delegations sent abroad under Operation Sindoor to speak during the Lok Sabha debate. His possible intervention could give weight to the opposition’s criticism of India's current foreign policy handling.
The NDA is also expected to bring forward members of the official delegations that participated in the post-attack diplomatic campaign, projecting them as voices of India's international credibility.
With political temperatures running high, the debate may turn into a flashpoint for ruling opposition confrontations over terrorism, border policy, and internal security lapses. The Pahalgam terror attack, in which several Amarnath pilgrims were killed, has already triggered public outrage and raised serious concerns over Jammu & Kashmir's security landscape.
