New Delhi: Kerala's petition on Mullaperiyar issue will be considered by the court tomorrow. Kerala had approached the Supreme Court to contest Tamil Nadu government’s decision of opening the dam without warning. Kerala's petition will be considered along with other public interest petitions related to Mullaperiyar tomorrow.
Protests are strong in the Kerela against Tamil Nadu government’s decision to open the Mullaperiyar Dam at night without warning. Kerala wants a committee to be formed to decide on the release of water from the dam. The committee should have two members from each of the two states. The petition filed by Kerala in the Supreme Court also seeks an injunction restraining Tamil Nadu from releasing water from the dam without warning.
The Chief Minister and the Chief Secretary had earlier informed Tamil Nadu of the state's concern over the opening of the dam without warning, but Tamil Nadu continued this practice. Kerala's move is to approach the issue legally. The state has no objection to the opening of the dam. But opening the dam at night without proper warning also disrupts the work of the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority.
Meanwhile, the water level in the Mullaperiyar dam rose to 142 feet again.
