Death toll climbs, estimated damage of $4.2 million; Super Typhoon Rai leaves a trail of disaster

The death toll caused by the Super Typhoon Rai that swept across the Philippine last week climbs to atleast 208. The storm caused widespread flooding and damage. About 52 people remain missing and at least 239 others have suffered "considerable injuries" according to the Philippine National Police (PNP).

Rescue operations were hindered due to widespread power and communication outages. Buildings were destroyed and residents seen scrambling through mud and debris to salvage whatever they could from their damaged homes.

The storm which has weakened in intensity, is now a typhoon with maximum winds of 165 kilometers (103 miles) per hour, equivalent to a Category 2 storm. This is the 15th typhoon to hit the Philippines this year, with winds of up to 260 kilometers (160 miles) per hour, equivalent to a Category 5 storm, when it made its landfall on Thursday.
