Rising concerns over the spread of the Omicron variant of coronavirus has prompted Prime Minister Narendra Modi to hold a review meeting on the COVID-19 situation in the country on Thursday evening.
India recorded 236 cases of the Omicron variant of coronavirus across 16 states and UT’s. 104 people have recovered or migrated out of the above figures, according to the Union Health Ministry.
The Centre had earlier said that the Omicron variant of the coronavirus is at least thrice more transmissible than its Delta variant. The states and Union Territories, were also told on Tuesday to "activate" war rooms, analyse small trends and surges and to keep taking strict and prompt containment action at the district and local levels.
Demands to were made to the government to allow booster doses of vaccines to be administered to those already fully inoculated against COVID-19.
The ministry data updated on Tuesday also stated that India recorded 5,326 new cases of coronavirus infections, the lowest in 581 days, taking the total tally of COVID-19 cases to 3,47,52,164, while the active cases declined to 79,097, the lowest in 574 days.
