New Delhi : Chevalier Adv V C Sebastian, has expressed his shock and concern over the non-approval of the FCRA renewal application of Missionaries of Charity. Sister M. Prema, the current Superior General of the Missionaries of Charity of Calcutta, had stated in a letter that the FC accounts of the charity will not be operated until the matter was resolved. The letter was issued in response to reports in Media that the bank accounts of the charity were frozen by the government.
“Ministry of Home Affairs refusal of the renewal application of Missionaries of Charity is really a painful shock and a cruel Christmas gift to the poorest of the poor” said Chevalier Adv V C Sebastian, Secretary, Catholic Bishop's Conference of India, Council for Laity.
He added that, foreign funding for the Missionaries of Charity, an Internationally renowned charitable organisation has come under a cloud now.
The Ministry of Home Affairs said that in the application of Missionaries of Charity was rejected because "while considering MoC's renewal application some Adverse Inputs were noticed". The government has not explained the adverse inputs even as the decision to block inflow of foreign funds.
There was no clarity about the "Adverse Inputs” that the government claimed to have noticed.
All over India, Missionaries of Charity has over 240 houses for orphans, the destitute and AIDS patients. Also, members of Missionaries of Charity adhere to the vows of chastity, poverty, obedience and of giving wholehearted free service to the poorest of the poor. Their healing touch has given millions of destitute people a new lease of life.
At the present situation after midnight of 31st December 2021, MoC would have no funds to feed its large number of poor people.
V C Sebastian told that, the Central Government must ensure clarity regarding the legal basis of its actions and dispels apprehensions that it is targeting the minority communities in India. The government should also reconsider this issue very seriously and renew the FCRA of Missionaries of Charity at the earliest.
