New Delhi: RBI has introduced a new Unified Payment Interface (UPI) for feature phones. The service, which was earlier available through various apps using a smartphone, will now be available on phones that do not have internet access through the new system.
The new system, UPI123Pay was launched by Reserve Bank Governor Shaktikanta Das. He also unveiled a 24x7 helpline for digital payments – DigiSaathi. According to the Reserve Bank of India, the service will benefit 40 crore feature phone users in India.
UPI123Pay can be used by following three simple steps. Customers with feature phones can use this system for almost all transactions, except scan and pay. Transactions through this system are done using Interactive Voice Response (IVR) technology. Missed call-based system will also allow this service.
'The UPI 123 Pay system will bring the rural sections of the society into the digital payment landscape. This will open a large portion of the economy to new opportunities,” the governor said.
