Will Smith’s resignation from Oscars Academy, Smith’s movie stalled by Netflix

US actor Will Smith, who was awarded the Best Actor title at the 94th Academy Awards, has resigned from the Academy following an on-stage incident with comedian Chris Rock.

Rock had joked about Smith’s wife’s shaved head (a result of a hair-loss condition called Alopecia) on stage during last Sunday’s ceremony, following which Smith slapped Rock.

Will Smith’s statement said, "My actions at the 94th Academy Awards presentation were shocking, painful, and inexcusable.”

The Academy said it accepted the resignation and would "continue to move forward" with disciplinary proceedings. The 10,000 member Academy considers people nominated for an Oscar, automatically for membership.

While most other people cannot apply to join, they need a nomination by at least two existing members.

"The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all those in attendance, and global audiences at home," said Smith.

He further went on to say, ”I betrayed the trust of the Academy. I deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. I am heartbroken”.

Smith said he wanted to "put the focus back on those who deserve attention for their achievements”.

He wrapped his statement saying, "change takes time and I am committed to doing the work to ensure that I never again allow violence to overtake reason”.

As per reports, Will's movie Fast and Loose has been stalled by Netflix.

An Instagram post on the matter was shared on Wednesday by Smith's wife, actress Jada Pinkett-Smith, writing, ”This is a season for healing and I'm here for it.”
