Soldier missing during rescue operation in Rio Grande River

Texas: A Texas National Guard soldier has gone missing while trying to rescue migrants trapped in the Rio Grande River on the U.S.-Mexico border.

The soldier was swept away near the border town of Eagle Pass, about 140 miles southwest of San Antonio. The Texas Military Departmetn searched the area but could not find him.

Texas Department officials said media reports that the soldier had died were false and that it could not be confirmed until the soldier was found. Police said there have been 10 drowning deaths this week alone.

The rescue operation has been carried out for more than a week as part of Operation Lone Star, a border security initiative launched by Governor Greg Abbott in March 2021.
