Washington: The age limit for private individuals to buy a gun may be raised from 18 to 21 in the US. The proposal approved by the House of Representatives. but it may be a setback in the Senate due to opposition from Republicans. Bill become law only with the approval of the Senate.
Only a few members of 50 Republican senators have an open approach to the new gun law. Democrats may favor compromise. The final agreement is expected by the end of this week.
The vote comes after a House committee heard testimony from recent shooting victims and family members, including from 11-year-old girl Miah Cerrillo, who covered herself with a dead classmate's blood to avoid being shot at the Uvalde elementary school last month.
"He told her goodnight, and shot her in the head," Miah Cerillo, 11, said.
"And then he shot some of my classmates."
The primary school shooting claimed the lives of 21 people, including 19 young children, and has renewed the US debate over gun laws.
Past efforts to advance national gun-control regulations have often stalled.
In an emotional pre-recorded testimony before a congressional panel on US gun violence, Miah recalled her experience, which for her began when a teacher told students to hide after seeing the gunman.
The 18-year-old attacker shot her teacher as children took cover behind her desk and their book bags.
Miah was wounded by fragments in her shoulders and head. She pretended to be dead before using her teacher's phone to call 911 and ask for police.
"I thought he was going to come back to the room, so I grabbed the blood and put it all over me," she said.
Mia's father, Miguel Cerillo, said his daughter had not recovered from the trauma after the incident. I heard experiences from the parents of Lexi Rubio, one of the students killed in the shooting.
