Mumbai - U.S. media giant Walt Disney and Indian conglomerate Reliance Industries won the bid to broadcast the IPL, the world's richest cricket league, for the next five years in deals fetching its organisers $6.2 billion.
The three-day online auction ended on Tuesday, adding triple value to the league's broadcast from the last one in 2017.
Disney-owned Star India (DIS.N) retained the television broadcast rights to the Indian Premier League, the world’s richest cricket league, for Rs 23,575 crore ($3.02 billion).
Viacom18, a broadcasting joint venture run by Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries, won digital streaming rights from 2023 to 2027, Rs 20,500 crore ($2.62 billion).
Viacom18, also secured non-exclusive international rights for Rs 3,257.5 crore, while Times Internet secured rights for international broadcast for some regions.
The BCCI received a total of Rs 48,390 crore ($6.2 billion) from the media rights for the five-year period (2023-2027), BCCI secretary Shah said in a series of tweets.
"IPL is now the 2nd most valued sporting league in the world in terms of per match value," he tweeted. IPL is now only behind American football's National Football League (NFL) in terms of match-value.
The biggest beneficiaries of the record-setting auction would be the teams that draw the best global talent and have a worldwide audience.
Going by BCCI’s previous statement on revenue sharing from the broadcasting rights, franchises have a right to 40 percent of the revenues, with the rest staying with the board.
Others in the race included Sony Corp's India unit and local broadcaster Zee Entertainment, both of whom are in the middle of a proposed merger.
