Being Human Today

Being Human Today

AI Ethics has arisen as a crucial subject that everyone should be aware of as the technology spreads and governments try to keep up with it in terms of structure and regulation. So we need to explore what exactly is AI Ethics so that we can trace out its significance for our contemporary society. AI Ethics will help us to understand better the meaning and significance of being human today.

What is AI Ethics?
The term "AI Ethics" is used to refer to a large group of standards for ethical AI that integrate safety, security, human welfare, and environmental issues. Definitions vary. An example of a field of AI ethics is:

AI bias avoidance. Since AIs learn from data, they may exhibit bias toward poorly represented parts of the data (and already do). In particular, poorly taught AIs may exhibit prejudice toward minorities and underprivileged groups. Famous instances of bias have humiliated well-known corporate brands and raised legal concerns, such as in chatbots and employment tools.

Privacy and AI. Information is the basis for AI learning. Users contribute a substantial portion of this data. Not all users are aware of the data that is being collected about them or how it is used to make judgments that could have an impact on them. Even today, a variety of data points can be utilized to track, identify, and tailor user experiences, including internet searches, online purchases, and social media comments. While this may be advantageous (such as when an AI suggests a product a user would like), it may also lead to unintended bias (such as some offers being provided to some consumers and not others).

Avoiding AI errors. Poorly designed AIs may make errors that result in anything from financial loss to fatalities. Ample testing is necessary to make sure that AIs do not endanger people or the environment.

Handling the environmental impact. Recent models have over a trillion parameters each, and AI data and models are continually growing in size. AI is a substantial resource consumer because training these big models requires a lot of energy. Techniques for energy-efficient AIs that balance performance and energy efficiency are currently being developed by researchers.

Importance of AI Ethics
Experience with AI has shown that adhering to excellent AI Ethics is not just morally righteous conduct, but also necessary to obtain good financial value from AI. Business risks related to ethics include product failures, legal troubles, brand damage, and more.

Countries, including cities and counties, are approaching AI Ethics in their unique ways. As a result, it follows that businesses must be aware of national and even local laws governing artificial intelligence. The "Right to Explanation" clause in the EU General Data Protection Rules and the pertinent sections of the California Consumer Privacy Act are two examples of well-known AI-related regulations. Cities in the US are deciding how to use algorithms, particularly those used in law enforcement, at a more local level. The impending AI Act in the European Union is one of the most significant legislative initiatives in AI.

AI Ethics becomes a crucial component of AI literacy for most people as people from all walks of life begin to see AI in their daily lives and at their places of employment. In addition to Responsible AI practices, AI Ethics should now be taught in high school and middle school as well as in professional business courses. One might anticipate that awareness of AI Ethics will spread as regulations like the AI Act become more common and kept up to date.

It may be noted that AI Ethics is closely connected to what it means to be human today. The way we understand ourselves, including our deepest aspirations, hopes and sorrows are significantly different from what it was a century ago. What makes human beings is very much shaped by AI. Being aware of it, we need to pay attention to its ethical implications, so that we can formulate a new spirituality of closeness with ourselves, the world outside (both virtual and real worlds) and with AI (including robotics)!
