Kochi: The KCBC Jagratha Commission (KCBC Commission for Social Harmony and Vigilance) stated that the government’s actions to curtail addiction to drugs is commendable. The government is taking appropriate decisions at a time when more care and vigilance is needed against intoxication. The commission also stated that measures such as ensuring severe punishment for the accused in narcotic cases and structuring steps to make school premises drug-free are appropriate.
It has only been a year since serious discussions on marketing and consumption of drugs has commenced in the state. It was during this year that the seriousness of the challenges related to the widespread usage of drugs was identified. In this context, the announcement that the government is taking strict measures to control the increased drug use in Kerala is laudable.
While anti-drug efforts focused on schools and business establishments are appropriate, specific areas and centers where the new generation of deadly drugs are distributed, and the cartels behind them, need to be identified and punished.
Exploitation of Girls by making them a part of drug gangs under the pretence of romantic relationships, increased cases of drugging and sexual exploitation, gold smuggling, money laundering and the forces behind it all need to undergo detailed investigations and studies.
In the wake of revelations that drug sales worth thousands of crores are happening, investigative agencies must be prepared to bring to light the criminals behind this trade. The state can be completely free from drugs only if such mafias are identified and wiped out, which have turned Kerala into a hub for drugs.
Awareness should also be raised about the various pitfalls of drug addiction among children and youth. In view of the increase in films promoting intoxicants, the government should be prepared to impose strict restrictions on such films. The KCBC Jagratha Commission also demanded that the government should prepare separate systems and seek the help of voluntary organizations to implement anti-drug awareness programs at various levels.
