Rome: A half-naked photo shoot of a tourist in front of the famous St. Andrew's Cathedral in the city of Amalfi in Italy has sparked widespread protests. A photo of a young woman standing on the steps in front of the church's entrance sparked criticism. The video of the photo shoot is circulating on social media.
The British woman posed for a photo in front of a portrait of Jesus. The body parts are covered with only a long red cloth. The photo was taken by the woman's friend. Another young woman was also there to help. It is also alleged that the photo shoot was done without taking the permission of the people concerned.
Historian and author Laura Thayer told the international media CNN that the incident at the church was shocking. They are also from the city of Amalfi.
'This cathedral is not only a place of worship but also a place close to the hearts of the local people. The bronze doors of the church tell the history of Amalfi. These doors are opened for processions, weddings and funerals - added Laura.
Some commented that it was unacceptable and embarrassing to undress in front of the cathedral. 'The scandalous thing is not that they did a nude photo shoot, but that they chose the front of a holy place as a location' - goes another comment.
Built in the 9th century, the cathedral is named after Saint Andrew the Apostle. His relics are said to have been kept in the church since 1206. This cathedral was built during the heyday of Amalfi. Today its narrow streets are crowded with tourists.
