New Delhi : The Election Commission of India has granted national party status to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), while the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Communist Party of India (CPI), and Trinamool Congress have lost their national party status.
To be recognized as a national party, a political party must secure at least 6% of the votes polled in four or more states in Lok Sabha or assembly elections, or win at least two seats in the Lok Sabha from three or more states in the general elections.
The AAP fulfilled the eligibility criteria by winning four Lok Sabha seats in the 2014 general elections and securing more than 6% of votes in the Delhi, Punjab, and Goa assembly elections. The NCP, CPI, and Trinamool Congress lost their national party status as they failed to meet the required criteria in the recently held assembly elections.
