"Mexico's Presidential Jet Finds a New Home in Tajikistan: A Twist in Political History"

MEXICO CITY -The Mexican government announced on Thursday that it has sold its presidential jet to Tajikistan, putting an end to the long-standing political drama that President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador used to criticize the extravagance of his predecessors. The President stated on Twitter that the sale price of the jet used by former President Enrique Peña Nieto was approximately $92 million. In a video attached to his tweet, he claimed that this sale indicates a shift in Mexican politics since he took office.

While sitting with officials, President Lopez Obrador stated that it was important for people to know how authorities acted in the past and that this kind of behavior will no longer be tolerated. Further information on the sale of the presidential jet to Tajikistan will be revealed next week, including the costly maintenance of the aircraft. Jorge Mendoza, head of national development bank Banobras, revealed that the Tajikistan state council has ten days to take possession of the plane. Lopez Obrador, who has long been an advocate against political corruption, had previously aimed to sell the plane for $150 million after its original purchase price of $218 million in 2012.

Lopez Obrador had announced his plans to sell the presidential jet shortly after taking office in late 2018. However, no sale occurred for years, and the Mexican leader even proposed raffling off the aircraft at one point. Lopez Obrador, who prefers commercial flights, stated that the proceeds from the sale would fund the construction of two 80-bed public hospitals in southern Guerrero and Oaxaca states, the poorest regions of the country, and that military engineers would construct them and inaugurate them before his term ends.
