Kollam: A female doctor stabbed to death by an accused school teacher brought for a medical checkup at Kottarakkara Taluk Hospital.
The deceased is 25-year-old Vandana Das of Kaduthuruthy in Kottayam. She was a house surgeon at the hospital. Vandana was a final year MBBS student at Kollam Azeezia Institute of Medical Sciences & Research.
The accused, Sandeep, is a teacher at Nedumpara UP School. The 42-year-old was injured in a fight with his neighbours. He was brought to Kottarakkara hospital at 4.30 am on Wednesday and while his wounds were being treated by the doctor, he took surgical scissors and stabbed her.
Doctor Vandana was taken to KIMS Hospital Thiruvananthapuram, but her life could not be saved. Five people, including those who tried to stop the attack, were injured.
Police had taken Sandeep into custody after he was involved in a fight with his neighbours. As he was injured during the fight, police brought him to the hospital.
It is learnt that Sandeep was under treatment in a de-addiction centre. He also stabbed home guard Alex Kutty and sub-inspector Manilal. He is currently under police custody.
Police officers and hospital staff are clueless about what provoked the accused.
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has called for a total strike in hospitals across the state to protest the death of the woman doctor. According to the IMA, the strike, which will last until 8 am on Thursday, will not affect the intensive care units or emergency wings.
The State Human Rights Commission has filed a voluntary case in the case of the accused stabbing to death a woman doctor during her treatment at the Kottarakkara Taluk Hospital. Commission member VK Binakumari demanded that the Kollam district police chief submit a report urgently within seven days. The action is based on media reports.
A special sitting of the High Court today in the case of stabbing a woman doctor to death in Kottarakkara Taluka Hospital. A bench comprising Justice Devan Ramachandran and Justice Kausar Edappagath will hold the sitting at 1.45 pm.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Governor Arif Mohhamed Khan reached the hospital where the body of the young doctor is kept.
