Government unveils 'SANCHAR SAATHI': AI-driven portal tracks lost phones, detects scam numbers

Introducing Know Your Mobile (KYM) reform, users can now verify the number of mobile connections issued under their name by logging in with their mobile number. Today, Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister for Communications, Electronics & IT and Railways, inaugurated the citizen-centric portal 'Sanchar Saathi'. This portal offers a range of reforms and services related to mobile connections and telecommunications. Access the new service at https://sancharsaathi.gov.in.

At the launch event, the Minister emphasized three major reforms incorporated within the framework of the portal. The initial reform entails the implementation of the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR), which facilitates nationwide tracking and blocking of lost or stolen mobile phones.

The second reform, known as Know Your Mobile (KYM), empowers users to verify the count of mobile connections issued under their name by logging in using their mobile number. This feature assists in identifying any unauthorized or undesirable connections, which can be promptly blocked.

As part of the Sanchar Saathi portal, the third reform presents an Artificial Intelligence & Facial Recognition (ASTR) solution for verifying telecom SIM subscribers. This advanced AI-driven technology allows for comprehensive analysis of mobile connections and incorporates features such as sending IMEI-based phone theft information to law enforcement agencies and device owners. Moreover, it enables the blocking of phone numbers linked to a specific IMEI and facilitates tracking of stolen mobile devices. Furthermore, the system notifies users if a previously used IMEI number is associated with the purchase of a mobile phone.

The portal's utilization of artificial intelligence to detect fraud cases is a pivotal aspect. Through an AI-driven tool developed by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Param Siddhi supercomputer, the system has examined 870 million mobile connections, identified 4 million suspicious mobile numbers, deactivated 3.6 million mobile numbers, and blacklisted more than 40,000 Point of Sales (PoS) devices engaged in fraudulent activities. Notable instances include situations where multiple connections were obtained using the same subscriber image but different names. For instance, in one case, 6,800 connections were established using the same subscriber image with different names, while in another case, 5,300 connections were made under the same image with different names.

The Sanchar Saathi portal and its reforms strive to enhance transparency, security, and accountability within the telecommunications industry. By harnessing technology and artificial intelligence, it equips citizens with tools to safeguard their mobile connections and combat fraudulent activities.
