Rescue operations and evacuations persist in Italy's Emilia-Romagna region as emergency services tackle the aftermath of widespread flooding. As of late Thursday, authorities reported a death toll of 14 individuals, with the possibility of further increases during the weekend.
Following severe flooding and numerous landslides that affected numerous cities and towns across the northern region, additional bodies were discovered on Thursday. Thousands of residents had to be evacuated as the flooding caused significant damage to homes, shops, and infrastructure. Media reports indicate that roads were blocked by storm debris, and train travel was disrupted.
The coastal area of Emilia-Romagna faced a double blow, with heavy rainfall on previously drought-stricken ground two weeks prior, leading to overflowing rivers overnight. The region's geographical positioning between the Apennine mountains and the Adriatic Sea contributed to the formation of a weather system that unleashed rainfall equivalent to half the average annual precipitation in just 36 hours.
