Los Angeles - A tragic incident unfolded over the weekend as a 17-year-old boy lost his life while attempting a social media stunt on a Los Angeles bridge, according to authorities. Police responded to the 6th Street Viaduct in the early hours of Saturday, where they discovered the teenager. He was later pronounced dead at a hospital, and his identity has not been disclosed at this time.
During a meeting of the Los Angeles Police Commission, Police Chief Michel Moore revealed that the teen had slipped and fallen while trying to climb one of the arches of the bridge, seemingly in an attempt to record and share a social media broadcast.
The newly opened bridge, inaugurated in July, stands as a $588-million structure spanning 3,500 feet (1,066.80 meters) above the Los Angeles River, connecting the downtown area to the historic Eastside. It replaced an 84-year-old Art Deco bridge and features stunning views of the city's skyline, adorned with thousands of LED lights. Intended to become a landmark for the city, this bridge holds the distinction of being the largest and most expensive ever constructed in Los Angeles.
The bridge, which initially gained recognition as an iconic landmark, has faced significant challenges, leading to multiple closures by law enforcement. It swiftly transformed into a hub for illicit activities, including street racing, graffiti, and unlawful takeovers that enticed large crowds to witness perilous vehicular stunts.
Furthermore, social media platforms witnessed a surge in daring stunts performed on the bridge. One notable incident involved an individual receiving a haircut while seated in a barber's chair positioned in the middle of the lanes.
Tragedy struck earlier in January when an unauthorized music video shoot on the bridge resulted in a fatal shooting.
Chief Moore addressed the Los Angeles Police Commission, acknowledging the dual nature of the location. While it instilled a sense of pride in the city, it unfortunately served as a backdrop for distressing incidents like these. He affirmed that increased police presence and patrols would persist at the bridge to combat such reckless actions.
