The Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) has issued a demand to the Nicaraguan government, calling for the immediate release of Bishop Rolando Jose Alvarez Lagos, who was sentenced to 26 years and four months in prison in February on charges of being a "traitor to the homeland.
" The IACHR's ruling, issued on June 27, also emphasized the need for the bishop to receive proper treatment, including access to healthcare, adequate food, and the ability to communicate with family members and legal representatives.
The court explicitly stated that this order should not be used as a means to delay the bishop's release. Additionally, the IACHR has requested that the Nicaraguan government provide an update on the bishop's situation no later than July 7.
On February 10, following the deportation of numerous political prisoners, including priests, to the United States by President Daniel Ortega's regime, Bishop Rolando Jose Alvarez Lagos was sentenced.
Although he was among those slated for deportation, the bishop refused to leave without first consulting with the priests and Nicaraguan bishops, a request that was denied.
The ruling by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) on June 27 demanded Álvarez's immediate release and called for him to be granted essential rights and dignified treatment.
In addition to the IACHR's ruling, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and the European Union Parliament have also called for Alvarez's release, along with other political prisoners and individuals arbitrarily detained by the Nicaraguan regime.
