New Delhi - The Supreme Court collegium, under the leadership of Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, made significant recommendations on Wednesday by proposing the names of Justice Ujjal Bhuyan and Justice S Venkatanarayana Bhatti for elevation as judges of the apex court. This decision was reached during a meeting of the collegium, which includes Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Sanjiv Khanna, B R Gavai, and Surya Kant. The resolution containing the recommendations was subsequently uploaded on the official website of the Supreme Court.
Justice Ujjal Bhuyan currently serves as the Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court, while Justice S Venkatanarayana Bhatti holds the position of Chief Justice in Kerala. Both justices have demonstrated their expertise and competence in their respective roles, which has led to their nomination for elevation to the Supreme Court.
It is important to note that the Supreme Court has a sanctioned strength of 34 judges. However, due to recent retirements, the court is currently functioning with 31 judges. Therefore, the recommendations for the appointment of Justice Bhuyan and Justice Bhatti aim to fill the vacancies and maintain the required strength in the apex court.
The collegium's meticulous consideration of the candidates and the subsequent recommendations reflect the importance placed on maintaining the integrity, expertise, and diversity of the judiciary at the highest level. These nominations highlight the commitment of the Supreme Court to select capable and deserving individuals who can contribute effectively to the judicial system and uphold justice in the country.
