The Apostolic Penitentiary has complied with a request made by Cardinal Kevin Joseph Farrell, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Laity, Family, and Life, in an effort to increase devotion among the faithful.
The Cardinal asked that Catholics participating in the upcoming Third World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly, which was established by Pope Francis, be granted a Plenary Indulgence.
The World Day will be observed on July 23, 2023, with the theme "His mercy is from age to age" (Lk 1:50).
Requirements to Receive Plenary Indulgence
The plenary indulgence will be granted to grandparents, the elderly, all faithful who take part in the solemn celebration presided over by the Pope in St. Peter's Basilica, as well as to all who attend Mass in various locations around the world, according to a decree issued by the Apostolic Penitentiary and approved by Pope Francis.
The indulgence is subject to the customary requirements of sacramental Confession, Eucharistic reception, and intercession for the Holy Father's intentions.
A Plenary Indulgence can be used on oneself or the souls in Purgatory to absolve them of the temporal punishment owed for sins that have already been pardoned.
The Apostolic Penitentiary grants the same Plenary Indulgence to individuals who devote a large amount of time to visiting elderly brothers and sisters who are in need or experiencing difficulties, such as the ill, the abandoned, and those with disabilities—either in person or by virtual means of communication.
People who are unable to leave their homes for important reasons will still have the chance to partake in the World Day Mass spiritually by praying, offering their sufferings, and watching broadcasts of the Pope's various celebrations. This will allow them to receive a Plenary Indulgence.
However, the indulgence necessitates that the pious keep their distance from sin and have the intention of quickly completing the three standard requirements.
The Elderly: Fountain of Knowledge and Experience
The Apostolic Penitentiary calls on priests who are qualified to hear confessions to make themselves generously available for the celebration of the Sacrament of Penance in the decree.
The decree only permits indulgence on Third World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly.
The announcement of the Apostolic Penitentiary gives the faithful a chance to develop their spiritual lives, show compassion for the aged, and ask God's mercy in a unique way.
The Third World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly serves as a reminder of the priceless knowledge, expertise, and affection that senior citizens contribute to the community and the church.
