Consistory to be Held in September for Election of 21 New Cardinals

Pope Francis announced that on September 30, 2023, the Vatican will host a consistory during which 21 new cardinals will be elected. The Consistory takes place before the start of the Synod on Synodality, which will be attended by representatives from all around the world in October.

According to the Holy Father, the appointment of the new cardinals to the Diocese of Rome demonstrates the unbreakable ties that bind the See of Peter to the local churches that are dispersed around the globe.

The Cardinal-elects come from different countries. The following is the list of the new Cardinals:

1. Archbishop Robert Francis Prevost, O.S.A., Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops
2. Archbishop Claudio Gugerotti, Prefect of the Dicastery for Eastern Churches
3. Archbishop Víctor Manuel Fernandez, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith
4. Archbishop Emil Paul Tscherrig, Apostolic Nuncio
5. Archbishop Christophe Louis Yves Georges Pierre, Apostolic Nuncio
6. Archbishop Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem
7. Archbishop Stephen Brislin, Archbishop of the Cape Town (Kaapstad)
8. Archbishop Angel Sixto Rossi, S.J., Archbishop of Cordoba

Along with the newly elected cardinals, the Pope also announced that he will join the other members of the College of Cardinals—two archbishops and one religious—who have distinguished themselves by outstanding contributions to the Church.

Pope Francis requested prayers for the future cardinals to assist him in his service to the Church and for the well-being of the faithful before bidding adieu to the faithful in St. Peter's Square.
