Queensland, AUS - An Australian army helicopter crashed into the waters off Hamilton Island in Queensland on Friday night, raising fears that all four pilots on board might have lost their lives. Search and rescue teams were dispatched immediately, and they discovered debris from the aircraft, adding to the grave concerns surrounding the accident.

The ill-fated flight was part of a two-helicopter mission involved in the Talisman Sabre military training drills conducted jointly with the United States military. Due to the severity of the incident, the Australian Defence Force made the precautionary decision to temporarily suspend the use of MRH90 helicopters.

As the search operation continued, the Talisman Sabre Exercise director, Brigadier Damian Hill, revealed that HMAS Brisbane had been aiding in air surveillance of the area. Additionally, HMAS Adelaide was scheduled to arrive on the scene to support the search efforts the following night.

In light of the tragedy, the families of the missing pilots were promptly notified, and the defense authorities emphasized that their well-being was of utmost priority. An aircraft accident investigation team was set to begin an inquiry into the incident.

In response to the crash, the ongoing military exercise was temporarily paused so that personnel could reach out to their families and assure them of their safety. Some exercises later resumed in regions such as Western Australia and the Northern Territory.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Douglas McDonald of the Queensland Police confirmed that search and rescue teams had located debris from the helicopter, which would be integral to the investigation into the accident. Specialized resources were working in tandem with the Australian Defence Force to carry out the search and rescue operation.

With a heavy heart, Defense Minister Richard Marles announced the launch of the search and rescue operation earlier in the day, expressing his condolences to the aircrew and their families. He acknowledged the gravity of such military exercises, essential for the readiness of the defense force.

As a safety precaution, the ADF established an operational pause for all MRH90 helicopters to assess and mitigate any potential risks before resuming operations.
