Bangladesh Dengue Death Toll Crosses 100 as Health Authorities Brace for Worse in August

Dhaka, Bangladesh: The ongoing dengue outbreak in Bangladesh has claimed 101 lives so far in 2025, with health officials warning that the situation could worsen significantly in the coming weeks. According to official data, more than 24,183 cases have been recorded this year, putting the healthcare system under mounting strain.

The spread of the disease has been accelerating rapidly. In August alone, 19 deaths have already been reported, following 41 fatalities in July and 19 in June. Epidemiologists fear that August could see up to three times the number of cases recorded in July, with the peak likely to arrive in September if urgent interventions are not implemented.

The outbreak is being driven by favorable breeding conditions for Aedes mosquitoes, including warm, humid weather and intermittent rainfall. While Dhaka remains the epicenter of the crisis, rural areas are increasingly being affected, many of which lack sufficient healthcare resources to manage severe cases.

Authorities have urged residents to take preventive measures such as using mosquito repellents, sleeping under nets, and eliminating stagnant water where mosquitoes breed. Insecticide spraying and community clean-up drives are being intensified in high-risk areas.

Health experts are also stressing the importance of early medical intervention for patients showing severe symptoms, as timely treatment can reduce the risk of complications and death. Officials warn that without strong community participation and coordinated government action, Bangladesh could face a crisis on the scale of the 2023 outbreak, which saw over 1,700 deaths and more than 321,000 infections.
