Pope Francis Urges Action Against Human Trafficking on UN World Day

During the Sunday Angelus, Pope Francis reflected on the significance of two World Days observed on July 30, declared by the United Nations.

He emphasized the importance of International Friendship Day, which underscores the value of friendship between different peoples and cultures.

The second theme marked the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, aimed at combating the heinous crime that treats people as commodities.

The Pope expressed his concern about the widespread issue of human trafficking, affecting numerous vulnerable individuals, including children, women, and workers. He commended those working to fight against trafficking and support its victims, praying for blessings upon their efforts.

The theme of this year's World Day Against Trafficking in Persons is "Reach every victim of trafficking, leave no one behind." The annual event aims to raise awareness and encourage governments, law enforcement, public services, and civil society to strengthen prevention, victim identification, and support, and end impunity.

Pope Francis has been a strong advocate against this scourge, condemning the exploitation and subjugation that strip individuals of their dignity and freedom, and treating them as mere objects for profit.

Msgr. Robert Vitillo, Secretary General of the International Catholic Migration Commission (ICMC), lauds the Pope's stance and highlights the growing global phenomenon of human trafficking.

The ICMC, through its member organizations, offers assistance and support to trafficking victims, creates awareness in vulnerable communities, and seeks partnerships to bring about lasting change.

Msgr. Vitillo points out that human trafficking has intensified due to various factors like economic crises, conflict, and the climate emergency, which result in inequality and displacement. Unfortunately, global conviction rates have declined despite these challenges.

The ICMC, based in Geneva, coordinates Catholic outreach efforts to assist migrants and counter human trafficking. Its member organizations work together on a national and international level to address the pressing issue of trafficking and provide support to those affected.
