'God is Calling You by Name’, Pope Francis Welcomes Young People to WYD

Pope Francis and a massive gathering of pilgrims were treated to a spectacular display of color and sound during the Welcoming Ceremony for World Youth Day 2023.

The event aimed to celebrate faith while showcasing the unity and diversity of the Church, blending tradition and modernity. Over 50 young people from 21 different countries, along with the WYD choir, orchestra, and numerous musicians, highlighted Portuguese culture.

A remarkable addition to this year's opening ceremony was a choreographic performance of the music's lyrics in Portuguese sign language, fostering inclusivity and encouraging the participation of those with hearing difficulties. The ceremony exuded joy and harmony, making it a memorable experience for all in attendance.

During the Welcome Ceremony at World Youth Day, the focal point was a Liturgy of the Word centered on St Luke's account of Jesus' commissioning of the seventy-two disciples.

In his reflection on the Gospel reading, Pope Francis extended a warm welcome to the young participants, emphasizing that God calls each of them by name out of His love for them. He encouraged the youth to recognize this essential truth during the event and let these days resonate as echoes of God's loving call.

Pope Francis underlined that the Church is a community of the called, not a group of perfect individuals, but rather a gathering of sinners with their problems and limitations. He emphasized that Christ's Church embraces everyone, regardless of their background or circumstances. As he reiterated, the invitation extends to the young and old, the healthy and sick, the righteous and sinners – truly everyone.

The Pope encouraged the crowd to join in saying, "Everyone, everyone, everyone!" to affirm the Church's all-encompassing embrace of humanity.

Pope Francis delivered a message of love and encouragement to the young participants, urging them to question and stay restless in their faith. He emphasized the beauty of God's unconditional love, assuring the youth that they are cherished just as they are, with all their flaws and aspirations.

The Pope encouraged them to have courage, seek answers, and move forward, knowing they are loved by God. The powerful affirmation, "God loves us," will serve as a guiding force on their journey of faith.

Following Pope Francis' address, a Litany honoring the patrons of World Youth Day was recited, which included Pope St. John Paul II, St. John Bosco, Bd Pier Giorgio Frassati, Bd Carlos Acutis, and several Portuguese saints and blesseds, such as St. Anthony, Bd Joan of Portugal, and Bd Maria Clara of the Child Jesus.

The liturgical ceremony concluded with the recitation of the Our Father and the Pope's final blessing.

For the grand finale, the performers presented a choreographed anagram inspired by the Gospel reading, and it was addressed to all those present: "Go... I am sending you... the Kingdom of God has come near to you."

As the opening ceremony came to an end, and the Holy Father left the stage, the atmosphere in Lisbon's Edward VII Park was filled with the enchanting melody of this year's World Youth Day anthem, "Há Pressa no Ar" - "There's a Rush in the Air." The song added to the celebratory spirit, leaving a sense of excitement and anticipation in the hearts of all those present.
