The Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) officially confirmed a 5.3 magnitude earthquake in the Malatya province of eastern Turkey on Thursday, according to a report by TRT Arabic.
Ali Yerlikaya, Turkey's Minister of Interior, stated that initial assessments from the ministry indicated the collapse of a dilapidated building, causing substantial damage to two adjacent structures. Though no fatalities have been reported, 22 individuals sustained minor injuries.
The tremor, registered at a depth of 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) below the Earth's surface, was felt by residents in nearby provinces as well, as per TRT Arabic.
Governor Arif Yilmaz of Malatya conveyed to the state-run news agency, Anadolu Agency, that their disaster and emergency teams are actively conducting on-site evaluations within the province. Yilmaz added that early information verifies the collapse of an abandoned building.
During the earthquake, a child suffered leg fractures while crossing the street, Governor Yilmaz further noted. Additionally, several individuals were taken to hospitals due to injuries sustained while jumping from balconies.
Malatya had already suffered significant damage from the earthquake on February 6, 2023, making it one of the hardest-hit provinces.
