Russian drones pose threat to crucial Danube port for Ukraine's grain exports

Ukraine's defense ministry has reported that Russian drones launched an attack on Izmail, the crucial grain export port situated on the Danube river. Elevators and a grain silo in the Odesa region, near the Romania border, were reportedly damaged in the attack.

The ministry emphasized the significance of Ukrainian grain, which has the potential to provide sustenance to millions of people globally. Visual evidence from online videos showed the aftermath of the attack, revealing damaged structures and firefighting efforts to contain a sizable blaze.

The Danube, the European Union's largest river, has become Ukraine's essential export pathway following the breakdown of its Black Sea grain agreement with Russia in July. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky conveyed his concerns through Telegram, highlighting the impact of the attack on ports, grain, and global food security. Romanian President Klaus Iohannis strongly condemned the attacks as "war crimes" that undermine Ukraine's capacity to supply food products to those in dire need.

Russia's escalation of attacks on Danube ports follows its withdrawal from a deal that had granted Ukraine the ability to export grain through a secure corridor on the Black Sea. This series of attacks has led Ukraine to accuse Russia of deliberately hampering its grain exports.
