Pope Francis has delivered a heartfelt message of encouragement to the participants of the 44th Meeting of Friendship Among Peoples, also known as the "Rimini Meeting." This annual event, organized by the Communion and Liberation Movement, has been a significant gathering in the northern Italian town of Rimini since 1980, and this year's theme revolves around the idea that "Human existence is an inexhaustible friendship."
In his message, Pope Francis acknowledged the turbulent times we live in, marked by wars and divisions that breed fear and resentment. He lamented how global communication can sometimes magnify differences, making them seem like signs of hostility. However, he commended the Rimini Meeting for its courage in promoting the theme of friendship, particularly when the prevailing culture leans towards individualism and indifference.
The Pope emphasized a profound truth: "It is impossible to escape the situation alone; humanity has always experienced this, and no one can be saved in isolation." He pointed to the initiative God took in sending His Son, Jesus, who came as a friend to humanity, breaking the chains of loneliness and offering His friendship as an unmerited gift.
Addressing young people, Pope Francis praised the value of authentic friendship, which expands the heart and reflects the affection of the Lord. He stressed that the attitude of openness towards others as brothers and sisters is a hallmark of his papacy, drawing attention to his encyclical, Fratelli tutti, which underscores the significance of social friendship, even in the face of daunting challenges such as war.
The Pope called on Christians and people of goodwill not to turn a deaf ear to the cries for help rising from our troubled world. He emphasized that concrete actions and shared choices are needed to build a culture of peace, especially in fostering friendships among individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Pope Francis expressed his hope that the Meeting for Friendship Among Peoples would continue to promote a culture of encounter, inclusivity, and openness. He urged participants to approach others in the spirit of Jesus, reaching out, uplifting, and helping people encounter God. The Pope concluded his message by bestowing his Apostolic Blessing upon all those participating in the Rimini meeting.
