Budapest, Hungary - Chopra makes history with his gold medal-winning performance in the Men's Javelin final at the World Championships. The 25-year-old Indian made history by becoming India's first ever gold medallist in the event. He also made history by getting three Indian athletes in the top eight of the same event, including DP Manu with a sixth-place finish.
Chopra had a great second attempt and made it count with a huge 88.17 meter throw. He had a series of good throws in the first two attempts, reaching 86.32 metres and 84.64 metres. He then had a foul in the third attempt, but still managed to make it to the top of the leaderboard with an 87.82 meter throw. In the silver medal-winning position, it was the turn of Arshad Nadem of Pakistan, fresh from the Commonwealth Games, who had a season-best 87.82 metres.
Chopra’s accomplishments are not only remarkable at the national level but also at the international level. He is the second Indian to hold the Olympic and the World Championships title, after the legendary shooter Bindra. Bindra won the World Championships title when he was 23 years old and an Olympic gold when he was 25 years old.
Chopra became India’s first track & field gold medalist in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and cemented his status as a sports icon. He also won a silver medal in the 2022 World Championships.
But Chopra’s success goes beyond the present. He is only the third person in history to hold the Olympic title and the World Championship title simultaneously. The others are the legendary Jan Zelezny of the Czech Republic and Norway’s Andreas Thorkildson.
In addition to winning gold medals at the Asian Games in 2018 and the Commonwealth Games in 2018, Chopra has also won four Individual Diamond League Meeting titles, including two in 2022 and one in 2023, as well as the Diamond League champion’s trophy in the previous year. He won the junior world championship in 2016 and was the winner of the Asian Championships in 2017.
