G20 Summit 2023 Wraps Up in India, Brazil Set to Take Over Presidency on December 1, 2024

New Delhi - The G20 Summit of 2023 in India is set to conclude today, on September 10, 2023. Brazil is slated to assume the presidency for the next year's summit. The 19th Summit of G20 Countries is scheduled to take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil's capital, in 2024.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India hosted the 2023 G20 Summit, which has been characterized as the "most ambitious" presidency, resulting in the recording of more than 112 outcomes and documents.

India took over the G20 presidency on December 1, 2022, following the Indonesian Summit, and will retain it until November 30, 2023. On December 1, 2023, the G20 presidency will transition to Brazil for the 2024 Summit.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will formally transfer the G20 Presidency to Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on December 1, 2023. Subsequently, South Africa is set to assume the presidency in 2025, followed by the United States in 2026.

India's G20 Presidency has been acclaimed as the 'most ambitious' in the group's 24-year history, marked by the adoption of the G20 New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration with unanimous consent from all members and the inclusion of the African Union as a permanent member.

Regarding the 2024 G20 Summit, Brazil's President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has expressed his intention to invite Russian President Vladimir Putin, who was notably absent from the 2023 G20 Summit and the BRICS Summit in South Africa. Putin's absence is partly attributed to an arrest warrant issued against him for alleged war crimes in Ukraine.

Despite being a signatory and a member of the International Criminal Court, Brazil's president has indicated that if Putin were to attend the 2024 summit, he would not be turned over to the ICC. President Lula da Silva conveyed, "I believe that Putin can visit Brazil without any hindrance. What I can assure you is that if I become the President of Brazil and he visits the country, there will be no arrest."
