According to local reports, Kim Jong Un's armored train has arrived at its destination in Russia as the North Korean leader readies himself for a summit with President Vladimir Putin.
Video footage shared by Reuters showed Kim disembarking from his train and receiving greetings from Russian officials in Khasan, located in the Primorsky region. A video posted by the governor of Russia's Primorsky region, Oleg Kozhemyako, depicted Kim engaging with Russian officials following his arrival in Russia.
Earlier in the day, Russian media released a video of the green-and-gold train traveling north in Primorye, the far-eastern district where Vladivostok is situated. The appearance of the train in the video appeared to match images released by the Korean Central News Agency, North Korea's state-run media, on Monday.
The Kremlin had previously announced that Putin would attend an economic forum in Vladivostok. While it was confirmed that the two leaders would meet in the coming days, specific details regarding the timing and location of the summit were not provided.
U.S. officials have disclosed that discussions have been progressing between North Korea and Russia regarding a potential plan for North Korea to supply weapons to Russia.
Kim's journey to Russia commenced on Sunday when his train departed from Pyongyang for the planned meeting with President Vladimir Putin, as reported by a South Korean official to ABC News. The Korean Central News Agency confirmed the visit, stating, "Our Dearest Comrade Kim Jong Un will be visiting Russia upon invitation from Russian President Vladimir Putin. During the visit, he will meet Putin and hold a summit."
South Korean officials anticipated that the train would cover the approximately 683-mile distance to Vladivostok in about 20 hours, accounting for an extended stop at the Russia-North Korea border to switch to wheels compatible with Russian railway tracks.
Kim has rarely ventured outside of North Korea since assuming power in 2011. His most recent documented international travels took place in 2019, during which he crossed the border for a meeting with then-President Donald Trump and traveled to Russia by train.
When Kim does travel abroad, he prefers to utilize the heavily fortified and slow-moving bulletproof train, following the tradition of his father and grandfather, as reported by NPR.
