Montreat - Canada remains dedicated to enhancing its relationship with India, even as it grapples with "credible allegations" surrounding New Delhi's potential connection to the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. This statement comes from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Highlighting India's increasing global influence, Trudeau stressed the "significant importance" of Canada and its allies maintaining active involvement with India.

Speaking at a press conference in Montreal, Trudeau emphasized the imperative of Canada and its allies fostering constructive and substantial engagement with India due to its rising prominence on the global stage.

"India is an emerging economic powerhouse and a crucial geopolitical actor. As we demonstrated with our Indo-Pacific strategy just last year, we are deeply committed to forging stronger bonds with India," he conveyed to reporters.

However, Trudeau also underscored the importance of upholding the rule of law and called for India to collaborate with Canada to uncover all the pertinent facts of this matter.

Trudeau also mentioned receiving assurances from the United States regarding Secretary of State Antony Blinken's intent to address the publicly raised allegations of India's involvement in Nijjar's murder during his meeting with India's counterpart, S. Jaishankar, in Washington, D.C., on Thursday.

"The Americans have joined us in conversations with the Indian government, stressing the importance of their involvement in investigating the credible allegations that agents of the Indian government were responsible for the death of a Canadian citizen on Canadian soil," Trudeau stated, as quoted by the National Post.

"This is a matter that all democratic nations, all nations that uphold the rule of law, must take seriously. We are proceeding in a careful, responsible manner, grounded in the rule of law, in our engagements with all our partners, including our approach to the Government of India," he added.

On September 18, Trudeau informed the Canadian House of Commons that Canadian security agencies were actively pursuing "credible allegations of a potential link" between agents of the Government of India and Nijjar's killing. He also noted that he had conveyed these concerns directly to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the G20 Summit and that Canada had communicated its "deep concerns" to India's top intelligence and security officials, as reported by the National Post.

Trudeau subsequently called on the Indian government to cooperate with Canada in conducting a comprehensive investigation into this matter.

However, it's important to note that India has vehemently rejected these allegations, considering them 'baseless' and 'motivated.' Crucially, Prime Minister Trudeau has not yet provided any public evidence to substantiate the claim concerning Hardeep Singh Nijjar's killing.

Amid these strained relations, Trudeau's statements have exacerbated tensions between the two countries. India responded by suspending its visa services in Canada following Prime Minister Trudeau's accusations of Indian involvement in the killing.

In light of the tense relations between the two nations, India has released a formal advisory for its citizens and those intending to travel to Canada, urging them to exercise "extreme caution" due to the escalating incidents of anti-India activities, politically-sanctioned hate crimes, and criminal violence in the country.
