Pope Francis has unveiled his prayer intention for the month of October 2023, urging the Church to embrace a culture of listening and dialogue through the Synod. Pope's call to prayer is centered on the theme "For the Synod," emphasizing the importance of a synodal approach to the Church's mission.
In a video produced by the Pope's Worldwide Prayer Network, Pope Francis highlighted the synodal dynamic as a continuation of the Church's missionary purpose. He emphasized the role of prayer and discernment, guided by the Holy Spirit, in conducting the "apostolate of the ear" – listening with God's ears to convey His word.
Pope stressed that this approach brings believers closer to the heart of Christ, and the mission of the Church emanates from Him. He emphasized inclusivity, stating that the essence of mission is to reach out to, seek, welcome, involve, and not exclude anyone.
The call to prayer resonates with the upcoming General Assembly of the Synod on Synodality, commencing on October 4, 2023. This assembly follows a two-year process initiated in September 2021 with the release of a preparatory document by the Vatican. Catholics worldwide engaged in discussions at the parish level, with syntheses of these conversations forwarded to Bishops' Conferences.
Continental-level meetings were held, leading up to the General Assembly, which spans 2023 and October 2024.
Notably, the Synod will feature 363 voting members, including women, representing Bishops' Conferences, individuals appointed by Pope Francis, and participants in various roles. The Church's focus on listening and dialogue, guided by the Holy Spirit, remains central to this significant event.
Believers are encouraged to pray for the Church as it embarks on this synodal journey, aiming to infuse listening and dialogue at all levels and be led by the Holy Spirit to the world's peripheries.
