Velankanni Basilica Gears Up for Grand Marian Feast on August 29

Nagapattinam: Preparations are in full swing at the world-famous Marian pilgrimage center of Velankanni Basilica, as the shrine readies itself to celebrate the annual feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The celebrations will begin with the ceremonial Kodiyet (flag hoisting) on August 29, which marks the opening of nine days of prayer, devotion, and liturgy that attract lakhs of pilgrims from across India and abroad.

The inaugural Mass on August 29 will be celebrated at 5:45 pm by Dr. Sahayraj, Bishop of the Diocese of Thanjavur. Following the Eucharistic celebration, the Divine Liturgy and Holy Communion will be offered, symbolizing the solemn spiritual start of the annual festivities. The raising of the festival flag at the Basilica’s campus will signal the beginning of days filled with devotion, unity, and Marian spirituality.

From August 30 to September 7, the shrine will host Holy Masses, Novenas, and worship services in multiple languages, reflecting the multicultural devotion that Velankanni inspires. Pilgrims from various linguistic and cultural backgrounds gather to pray in their native tongues, embodying the Catholic Church’s universality. Services will be held across different chapels of the Basilica to accommodate the massive influx of the faithful.

A special provision has been made for Malayalam-speaking pilgrims, with Holy Mass in Malayalam scheduled daily at 9 am at the Vinmin Church, as announced by Fr. Arputharaj, Vicar and Vice-Rector of the Basilica. Similar arrangements are being made for Tamil, English, Hindi, and other regional languages, ensuring that every pilgrim feels spiritually at home during the feast.

The Velankanni feast is not only a religious celebration but also a cultural phenomenon, drawing devotees who come to honor the Blessed Mother, popularly known as “Our Lady of Good Health.” Pilgrims walk long distances, undertake novenas, and participate in charitable activities as acts of devotion. The event is also expected to bring together thousands of families, religious communities, and organizations, reinforcing Velankanni’s reputation as the “Lourdes of the East.”

With the feast culminating on September 8, the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the days leading up to it will be marked by processions, candlelight gatherings, and spiritual renewal for countless devotees. The Basilica authorities have assured that adequate arrangements are in place for accommodation, safety, and participation, as the town of Velankanni transforms into a vibrant hub of prayer and celebration.
