Apple's October Event: MacBook Pro, iMac, and M3 Chip Reveals

It's time for yet another Apple event, and this time, it came with a thrilling twist. The company surprised everyone with a "Scary Fast" event announcement just last week, setting off a wave of speculations about new chip reveals for their upcoming Mac lineup.

Our in-house Apple expert, Brian Heater, correctly anticipated that the event would likely feature a new 24-inch iMac and a MacBook Pro refresh. As it turned out, his predictions were right on the money. Apple's new M3 chip series took center stage at the event, powering all the devices showcased in the half-hour prerecorded presentation. The event had a spooky atmosphere with fog, bats, and eerie choir music, but for those who had been following the rumor mill, there were no major surprises.

Given that the event began at an unusual 8 PM ET / 5 PM PT, you might have missed the announcements while putting the final touches on your Halloween decorations or watching Monday Night Football. No worries, we're here to provide a comprehensive recap of everything Apple unveiled during the October event in one convenient place.

M3 chips

As anticipated, the "scary fast" element of the Apple event revolves around the introduction of the new M3 chips. Apple has officially unveiled the M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max, which are set to feature in the new 24-inch iMac and MacBook Pros.

In this release, Apple has placed a strong emphasis on enhancing graphical capabilities, introducing hardware-accelerated features such as ray tracing, mesh shading, and Dynamic Caching. Apple asserts that these advancements "dramatically increase the average utilization of the GPU" by efficiently allocating the exact amount of local memory required for specific tasks. These innovative chips were frequently compared to their M1 predecessors, with Apple stating that the M3 offers rendering speeds 2.5 times faster than the M1 and a CPU performance that is 30% swifter than the M1.

MacBook Pro models

The new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros come equipped with enhanced internal components, but what immediately catches your eye is the striking new color: Space Black. Underneath this sleek hue, you'll discover the latest M3 chip lineup. The 14-inch MacBook Pro is versatile and can accommodate any of the three M3 variants, while the 16-inch model exclusively offers the choice of M3 Pro or M3 Max chips.

As we've previously highlighted, both models with M3 chips are designed to maximize GPU performance, and Apple proudly claims that both form factors can deliver an impressive 22 hours of battery life on a single charge.

These laptops are available for pre-order starting tonight, with the 14-inch MacBook Pro starting at $1,599 and going up to $1,999 with the M3 Pro option. The base 16-inch MacBook Pro is priced at $2,499, and the cost of upgrading to the M3 Max chip for both models has yet to be revealed. For fans of the 2006 MacBook, the introduction of the Space Black color is particularly exciting news. This dark tone, which hadn't been replicated in subsequent MacBook iterations, including the Midnight MacBook Airs, will surely delight Mac enthusiasts.

M3 iMac

Apple is injecting a burst of color into its iMac lineup while also infusing it with additional power via the inclusion of the M3 chip. The company is retaining the 24-inch form factor but elevating the visual experience with a 4.5K retina display, a 1080p FaceTime camera, and a six-speaker system that supports Dolby Atmos and Spatial Audio. This revamped iMac will be up for pre-order, offering color choices in green, yellow, orange, pink, purple, blue, and silver, starting tonight.

The base model, priced at $1,299, features an 8-core GPU and an 8-core CPU, while for $1,499, you can opt for an upgrade to a 256 SSD.
